N95 — very nice indeed

Published by Karlin at 9:20 am under Uncategorized

I'm currently trialing a new Nokia N95 -- the anti-iPhone. Outside of being a disconcerting brown (what an odd colour!) I really like this handset. Great screen, clever slider design, 5 megapixel camera (that's better than my regular Sony), and maps and GPS that I haven't yet figured out how to use yet. The downsides are -- too many options and too many menus! That's a product of the smartphone being able to do a gazillion things but still it makes it a pain to figure out how to do something. Side question:does anyone ever use predictive texting? Maybe I am just an idiot (no confirmation comments needed, thank you!) but using predictive text seems to make it 10 times longer and 10 times more difficult to send a text.

Predictive texting is a mystery, until one day you crack it and realise that you’ve been wasting cumulitive hours of your life tap-tapping away.

    Then you’ll never go back.

Karlin – I could never get the GPS working on the N95 when I had a review model – other than that I found it to be a great phone.

On predictive texting, I use it all the time and find it allows me to send texts much more quickly. It is probably simply a question of getting used to it.

  3. I use predictive text all the time. It’s so handy and once you get used to it you’ll wonder how you every managed without it. It also helps reduce ‘txt speech’ which drives me mad! :)

If you are not used to predictive texting, then you have the habit of hitting the same key to get the next alternative letter to come up… which really messes up predictive texting.

It’s a matter of getting used to it.

Would be very interested to hear your opinion on the wi-fi and VOIP potential.

  7. [...] phone soon but thought I would do a quick post on how to get GPS and Nokia Maps working as I see a few people had trouble getting it [...]

  8. Karlin,

I picked up a N95 myself and had trouble with the GPS at first. I managed to get it working in the end. This is how I did it.

I couldn’t do the predictive texting either until one day I figured not to look at the screen until I had finshed the word (i.e. just one tap on the requisite key) – and hey, there was my word the way I wanted :-) or at least a list (Sony Erikson) or hitting * to get the other options (Nokia). Haven’t looked back since

Boy this topic sure got a lot of response… LOL. Guess maybe I need to give predictive texting a try. I had it on my Motorola and there, it worked in a way that helped. But the Nokia texting is really confusing to me.

That primer on setting up the GPS is really helpful, thanks!

It is weird having a mobile phone that sees everybody’s wireless networks when you walk down the street. I did set up the phone on my wireless network but haven’t actually done anything with the connection (have to think up something).

  11. Just got a mention on News Talk…

I just got a call from a friend to say that I got a mention on George Hooks technology show on Newstalk today. Today must be one of the only days that I didn’t listen to George on the way home from work. Partly due to the Fugitive competition …

  12. Karlin says:

Yep I mentioned your site this eve on the show, in the context of programming the N95 as it made it really easy (for GPS that is). I will put the link up over on the show blog as well.

    Hi Karlin,
I was one of the lucky winners of an N95 during your slot on the Right Hook a couple of weeks ago. It arrived yesterday. It’s fantastic.

I spent hours last night figuring it out. I would agree with you that is it rather complex with all the different options and functions. I like my gadgets and found it hard work but great fun. I like predictive text and this was the first phone that beat me on switching it on. I had to refer to the manual ;-) I was driving around today with the GPS running and it works quite well but in this case not even the manual helped in settign it up and I needed to refer to Stephen’s blog. The GPS is very heavy on the battery so today I bought a car charger and a cover to protect my new baby. I’m also going to get a 2GB memory card for photos, music, maps etc.

Anyway I just wanted to say thanks to you for the prize. Since I first heard about the phone on your show weeks ago I had looked into it and was determined to get one for Christmas so winning it was a big bonus.

    Thanks again
    Colm

  14. Karlin says:

Well you don’t need to say thanks to me personally, since I didn’t arrange prizes or even draw the names. :) But it is a brilliant phone, isn’t it? I am not much of a gadget girl but I really love that phone. I also am totally indebted to Stephen’s website as I’d never have figured out the GPS except for having his instructions on how to do it and the pictures…
