Social networks: how social?

The FTC is being asked to look more closely at the data collection practices of social network sites which may gather information and then share it in ways that could violate privacy regulations. The concerns come as Google announced its OpenSocial standards to let developers create social networking technologies that can link in to Google, and in the wake of Microsoft's investment in Facebook. Meanwhile the proposed Google/DoubleClick deal remains under scrutiny too for the same reasons, but writ much larger.
