Air supply

Published by Karlin at 11:22 pm under Apple, events

A MacBook Air arrived last week for me to trial; the packaging was that usual dance of the seven veils Apple experience where you slowly undress the boxed Desired. :D Out it came, and it is certainly a beaut. So light and slim! As one analyst quipped, definitely the size 0 laptop... Missing a drive of course in order to become this svelte but it is a lovely thing to work on - backlit keyboard, lovely brushed aluminum casing, doesn't seem to get as hot as other Mac laptops (so far...). I've been using it to roam the net and am checking out other features. It's not the laptop for everyone but it is definitely an object of desire. I will chat about it Monday on my 6:30pm Newstalk slot along with the Sony Cybershot I've been using during the week -- quite an improvement on my old Cybershot. Mine is only about three years old and already seems hopelessly out of date. Sheesh. It will be a busy short week for me -- I have my usual deadlines plus the radio slot, and on Thursday am chairing the  Q&A panel with Guy Kawasaki and Anthony Williams at the Irish Software Association conference on Thursday, then fly out to San Fran on Friday (and from thence on to Maui in Hawaii on Sunday for a week's holiday... woot!). I was a big Guy fan back when he was Apple's evangelist and he'd take the stage; the most exciting and energetic person in Apple in the non-Steve years. I'm thrilled and honoured to host a panel with him on it and am really looking forward to Anthony's Wikinomics perspective and insight from Chris Gill too. It should be a great session with those three in conversation.

Re Packaging: I’d heard the Air arrived in BertiePak (tucked into a brown envelope)!

PLEASE tell me that you’ll be podcasting / blogging (in extreme detail) the Q&A with GK and AW – and given GK’s avowed ice-hockey penchant get him to a hurling game. I did like his self-description as follows (when he was associated with the Macintosh (original) development team): “the biggest collection of ego-maniacs in the history of silicon valley”…

    Enjoy the panel!

    PS Don’t bring George!!!!!

We didn’t get to do the panel! The conference started late, the intro ran overtime, so we were over 20 minutes behind schedule by the time Guy took the stage. Anthony took two questions and Guy was going to come back after lunch — but I had to go and get sorted for my departure to San Francisco in the morning. :(
