No logo, no creativity?

This is pretty bizarre. Apparently if you go gaze at an Apple logo, you will think differently -- and more creatively -- right afterwards. So what would you want to do after staring at Big Blue's? Take the Presidential Oath? Write country music?
According to recent research from Duke University's Fuqua School of Business and the University of Waterloo, Canada, even a brief exposure to the Apple logo can make people more creative. The research focused on the way the mind is "primed," or influenced to respond to subtle stereotypical images with behavior associated with that stereotype. For instance, as Ars Technica explains, students primed with images of a parent can perform better on tests. To see if commercial brands could have similar motivating power, the researchers exposed students both subliminally and overtly to two logos -- Apple's, with its image of "nonconformity, innovation and creativity," and IBM's, carrying connotations like "traditional, smart and responsible." The students were then put through a creativity exercise, and darned if those even momentarily exposed to the Apple logo didn't perform better by both objective and subjective measure. "These experiments demonstrate that most any brand that has strong associations with particular traits could have the capacity to influence how we act," said Tanya Chartrand, one of the study's authors. Knowledge being power, you may be able to turn this trick of the brain to your advantage. Said Grainne Fitzsimons, another of the authors, "If you know you need to perform well on some task, say something athletic, you may want to surround yourself with images and brand logos that represent success in athletics."
Thanks, GMSV.
