That is a shockingly poor price for the company but I think there is a strong morality tale/parable in the way the share price rocketed and fell to earth since its foundation. It’s no Baltimore Technologies but I think it is more reflective of what can happen. I’m left nursing a loss but it is one coming after a good gain on the back of the company too so I’m going to chalk it down to experience.

I think this has been on the cards for a while.

Iona’s core technology (around the time of the share price high) was based on Corba – a way of getting disparate computers to talk to each other – innovative , but nasty to work with.

The market moved on, and Iona was more of a ‘me too’ rather than a leader (Web Services are now the connection mechanism of choice) with no ability to set it’s own pricing (competing against open source is never a good idea).

Given that background, *any* price is a good price.

Disappointing. Another example of Irish companies’ failure to scale.

Why is it we can never scale an Irish ICT company to European or global size? Why do even successful start-ups sell up as soon as the cash is on offer?

Where is our VC industry? Why cant Irish ICT companies win public sector projects? Why are numbers taking ICT college courses declining? Are multinationals hindering or helping the indigenous sector? Where are the serial entrepreneurs?

We cant claim to be developing the much-vaunted knowledge based economy, without a real indigenous ICT sector.
