Excellent piece in the times this morning, really great to see this issue aired so widely.
Before I turned to being a keyboard basher I was a vet, and saw the sorry results of the whole breeding mess on a daily basis. I also saw the sadness, not to mention the expense, it brought to people who innocently and genuinely believed that Kennel Club registration gave the puppy they bought as a family pet some sort of a “quality mark”.
And lest anyone think that the Kennel Club in Ireland is any different – you can disabuse yourself of that notion right away.
The fact that it is now being made such a mainstream issue is greatly to be welcomed, but I cannot say that my personal experience with either the Kennel Club or the bulk of pedigree dog breeders gives me much hope that it will be tackled in any significant way. I’d absolutely love to be wrong.
I saw that documentary last night….so upsetting. I don’t think I’ll ever look at a Cavalier or a Pug the same way again! Well worth watching if you’re a dog lover.
I also saw the documentary last night.. the breeding of pedigree dogs is all about revenue generation and not animal welfare…A “bunnie hugger” I am not, but I am appalled that this in-breeding practice is legal in this country, if this were happening in China we would all be howling in anger.(no pun intended) Truth is, up until now we didn’t know…therefore a well researched and balanced programme as produced by the BBC is exactly why we pay our licence fee. Judge for yourself, inform others & email your Member of Parliment ,MEP and sign the No 10 Downing street petition. Also inform your friends in the USA as most of their champion pedigree dogs originate from the kennel club UK. If everyone who is appalled sends one email politicians will listen and hopefully take action.
