You’ve hit on a very poignant theme – why are such skilled and talented individuals wasting it on hacking and creating nuisance virusus? A fatal flaw in human nature I think. If teachers and parents were more clued in and actually took an interest in young people’s interests and talents at computing, maybe some good could come of it.

Very true! And even for some more experienced old hands who keep meaning to get around to backing up…
Fortunately I knew most of what was important was already backed up (CVs etc) but I was trying to be extra sure. I think he lost some stuff but not too much.
