No one as Irish as Barack O’Bama

Published by Karlin at 11:12 am under general weirdness

And to prove it (setting aside the song and the difficulty of finding a rhyme for Obama), his ancestral town of Moneygall, Co Offaly (pop: 298) has come up with a celebratory barmbrack (that’s a loaf of bread full of raisins and other goodies, for those unfamiliar with buttery slabs of the toasted delicacy washed down with lashings of milky tea) called the Brack Obama. Yes, really — all was reported, direct from Moneygall, this morning on the Tubridy show (that after we had Obama FM broadcasting from the town from the Obama Bus all day yesterday). I am sure RTE will have the show up later for download. Meanwhile Moneygall is planning to build a luxury hotel — called the Barack Obama Hotel, what else? — and hoping for a visit from the man himself in the future. As always, the Irish are damned if they aren’t going to get a party out of some other country’s big event, and why not, given the, um, connections?

Anyway, I am looking forward to watching the inauguration this afternoon of the President I voted for (only twice has the man I voted for ever gotten in — well, three times if you count re-electing Clinton) with Irish friends. I am bringing the hot dogs!
