Buy modafinil without prescription, As it turned out, we were all there a good long time because there were things to be said, memories to be recalled. As a group of relatives and friends hoisted his coffin for his exit, he was applauded out the door. There were big men, strong men, crying as Arthur sailed past at eye level -- men used to having the occasional shiner from a fast punch thrown in the heat of a polo match; used to losing the odd tooth in one of the roughest games you can play. Used to having Arthur, the lovable court jester, at the centre of the throng at every event involving water and swimming and polo balls. He'd have liked that. He'd have made a good quip about it, given the lads a hard time, and ordered another cold pint.

Fittingly, his cherished Carlsberg Cup in water polo will be renamed the Arthur Dunne Cup going forward. Farewell, big man; I didn't know you well, but I knew you well enough to know how much you meant to so many, and how much your passing will be mourned in Ireland and beyond.

    Dear Karlin,

Great that you put words down about Arthur and the significant and even inspiring send-off he got today. I am an ex half-moon player; I would have played against you too and always rate articles you have written in the Times that I have read. I am after putting my 2 year old to bed and suprised myself by talking to her a bit about Arthur and then falling into a complete emotional heap – I rarely have delayed responses when it comes to emotion – I am sure it will be the case for many of Arthurs’ friends, not just delayed but sorrow over a long time. They say one of the few good things about losing someone loved is that inherit their virtues or good points – well, we better get to work. Keep up your own good work and thanks again for your thoughts.

  2. Hi,

I have just wiped the tears from my eyes after reading your article. Arthur was like a brother to me and will miss him badly. I was proud to play the whistle at his grave when we said goodbye.

On another note his send off was one hell of a party, i have never seen the like and probably will never see a funeral like it again.

    Slán mo chara,

    Shane

    Hi Karlin,
what a beautiful article. I am Bert O’Brien’s daughter. I am over in L.A. and to hear the news was devastating. I knew Arthur very well. He had such a good soul, so kind to everyone.
I will miss him dearly. I wish I could have been at the funeral. Water polo will not be the same without him.
    Rest in peace Arthur,
    Julie

I was never out once with Arthur Dunne where I didn’t laugh a lot, didn’t sometimes cringe, didn’t drink more than was enough, didn’t learn something new or didn’t end up somewhere else. And untimely and sad as his passing is, I and many others managed to tick all of those boxes at his funeral. Everyone there had at least one memory, one video clip, one photo to share with everyone else.

And what a send off. From his youngest nephews, Sean and Eoin, who read so well at the Funeral Mass, to both Fr. Christy and Fr. Jack who were so deeply sympathetic to the entire congregation, and to Ben Kealy who delivered the finest eulogy I have ever heard, Arthur’s many, many friends were united in their grief. And yet throughout the whole day there was much laughter.

His loss to us all is huge. From Ma Dunne, Colette, Gerry, Liz, Maeve, George and Sharon, all his extended family, and all those whose lives he touched, he will be greatly missed.

And I have no doubt that wherever he is now, he’s already re-united with old friends, made many more new ones and is, as he so often said, ‘out for the day’.

    Hello

I would just like to pay my own small tribute to arthur…i strated playing a lot later than most,i was 22 when i first went down to guinness pool on a monday evening hardly able to swim… as you pointed out in your article there was one person came over and made me feel at home and took time out of his own training to help me..of course it was the one and only Arthur Dunne and we became great friends..we spent many a funny day and night coming from the old outdoor season in the Clontarf baths on some sea swim usually ending up in Camden,Harcourt or Leeson st’s sometimes all three….! with the usual suspects in tow…(i know wynner, nico and julie ended up on more than one of the excursions over the years)….and more than likely ending in the Roma chipper on wexford st in the early hours…..

I can’t even begin to express in words how much i’m going to miss Arthur going into 2009 and beyond …..i know i’m a better person and my life a better one from having known him and being able to call him my friend…..

    Hi Karlin.
    Thanks for a beautiful article.
I’m living away, and on hearing the news of Arthur, I immediatley wanted to tell my friends here who have never met him what an amazing guy Arthur was, and why we all loved him so much. I’ve been struggling to really do him justice and your article has given me the words that I couldn’t find.
We will miss you Arthur, so much…….

    Hi Karlin,
What a lovely tribute. I am one of the many people who feels privileged to have known Arthur. His larger than life character lives on and makes it all the more difficult to imagine that he won’t be walking in that door any second now. Life really won’t be the same and if we can have half as much enthusiasm for life as Arthur did then it’ll be a good one.
    We’ll miss you Arthur. x

Training last night was quiet and strange,it will never be the same again without arthur..i miss him so much.I still expect the phone to ring..Life is quiet without the gentle man who created a party out of every single occasion ,never letting an opportunity go by to celebrate life with his many friends..he would have loved his funeral party and was probably delighted we were all “out for the day”. We were all so lucky to have known him and the time we spent with him was full of laughter and great craic.

  17. regger says:

I just got the terrible and shocking news today about the tragic passing of Arthur. So, I would like this evening to extend my deepest sympathies to his family.

I hear it has been a difficult couple of weeks for mooners of all ages with the passing of Arthur, Jock Coady and Bernie Costigan, all of whom were special people and loyal mooners who will be dearly missed by family and friends alike.

In my years of playing water-polo, one of the things I enjoyed most was its diversity. Unlike other sports, you played with and against people from all walks of life–students, eternal students, doctors, butchers, lawyers, fire-men, bankers, labourers, teachers and anything else one can think of or make up. Enter Arthur into this eclectic world, a world perfect for this joval giant. In a city that was noted for it characters, Arthur Dunne was surely one, a man whose driving force alone was the reason for many polo successes. It will be very difficult to replace his energy. I don’t believe I ever saw Arthur without a big wide smile on his face or seen nothing but goodness or kindness in his heart whether he had a polo ball in his hand or a pint. He has simply been taken from us too soon.

    Thanks for the memories.

  18. Vinny says:

    Karlin,
Thank you so much for a wonderful tribute to my best friend Arthur, I (like so many others) am lost without him. Where-ever your “At it” Arthur pace yourself were “Out for the Day”
    I’ll never forget you pal
    Yup

  19. PAT O'BRIEN says:

My lasting memory of Arthur was both of us pushing Fitzers car which had a flat battery down in Salthill. How the three of us laughed as Arthur tried to run and keep up with the moving car as it could not stop.
He will be sadly missed for his friendship by Claremorris and Corrib clubs.

  20. aoife mcphillips says:

can’t imagine Irish water polo and sea swimming without Arthur.

he will be badly missed but never forgotten.

  21. Keith O'Connor says:

    Hi Karlin,
Thanks for such a beautiful tribute. When I went to work this morning and the sun was shining the first thought that I had was of “the butcher” singing Summer Time! Well it is nearly summer time but the living wont be as easy without Arthur. We (Guinness) played half Moon last night and it was not the same without Arthur shouting from the balcony. “The Derby” match, as he called it, really was missing something. I will always take pride in the fact that I was Arthur’s last captain of the Leinster team. Waterpolo has lost a great servant but we have suffered a greater personal loss – the late, great Arthur Dunne.

Arthur, rest in peace – you will never be forgotten.

    Keith O’Connor

  22. Eoin Fahy says:

    Karlin,
one line resonates in your beautiful tribute… Arthur loved people. He was a complete social animal, such good company, so funny, witty and generous. He didn’t care about money or material things but uniquely took real pride and pleasure in family’s or friends achievements. There was mischief in him but no bitterness or jealousy.
20 years ago when I came into polo, I remember being so proud when Arthur knew my name. Then later I came to know and love him. He was better than one in a million… You’d ring him and hear the familiar background noise….. Hello (he’d answer) …. Where are you? …..I’m in the gym!
    As he’d say himself, classic.
    Thanks,
    Fats

  23. Moc says:

Even now Arthur has everyone thinking, talking and writing about him. This just shows how popular he is…. A great man who will be missed by everyone who knew him.

    Rest in peace.

  24. rachel crowder says:

I have just heard the very sad news about Arthur’s passing and I wanted to pass on my condolences to Arthur’s family and friends. I was very lucky to have spent some time with Arthur at the Guinness Waterpolo Tournament and also on a trip over new years many years ago. He was certainly the life and soul of the party .

May you rest in peace Arthur, I will have a pint for ya!

    love Rachel

  25. Paul Vassallo says:

I have just heard about the passing of Arthur. I am very shocked that we have lost one of the great characters. I have so many fond memories of him when we played waterpolo together and swam the races. Even though I had not seen him for many years I have often thought of him and the fun times we had. My sincere condolences to all the family.

Every Life he touched he filled with laughter. He will be sorely missed.

    Rest in Peace Arthur

    Paul
