New Technoculture podcast: Joe Rospars

I’ve just put the new podcast up, a recording of a talk and Q&A session with Joe Rospars, the man behind Barack Obama’s phenomenally successful use of Web 2.0 technologies in his presidential  campaign and in particular, on his campaign website, barackobama.com. Rospars was in Dublin on Wednesday for the launch of Fianna Fail’s new [...]

Safari 4 beta

Published byKarlin under Apple, internet

Wow. Very cool. Verrrrrrry fast. I like it. Like the “Top Sites” display and nice little zoom in feature — helpful to eyes that have a harder time reading very tiny print compared to days of yore. “Mail contents of this page” — love that. I use Firefox and Safari about equally, but this beta [...]

Userland blog archives — any ideas?

Published byKarlin under blogging

I have blog archives going back years and years — to early 2002 on Radio Userland. I’d like to pull those archives into this blog, or let them stand alone, and have the folders… but am not sure on the best way to do this. When I transferred over to Wordpress the only way to [...]

Fianna Fail goes all Barack

Believe it or not but Fianna Fail has President Obama’s new media director, Joe Rospars, and his Blue State Digital company focusing on a revamp of their party website. The new website launches later this evening, and I’m not clear on whether it will incorporate these new elements or if they are to come in [...]

Defining personal “privacy”

Published byKarlin under politics, privacy, rants

The Guardian has an extraordinary and depressing lead story on the front page today. In it, Sir David Ormond, the former head of security and intelligence at Whitehall, outlines his view that the privacy of the masses must be sacrificed for greater security against terrorism and that we will all just have to get used to huge [...]

Calling all geek girls! Pacman socks!

Published byKarlin under general weirdness

I popped into Penney’s on O’Connell Street to pick up some items and was thrilled to find these Pacman socks in the ladies socks section. Only €2.50 — and that includes the stripy pair as well! What a recession-proof geek bargain!
My only regret was not buying a second pair — think I’ll have to [...]

The Microsoft v Apple Stores… how will they differ?

Published byKarlin under Apple, general weirdness, tech

Let me count the ways… or rather let PC World, in a rather amusing column. I like reason 2:
The store will have six different entrances: Starter, Basic, Premium, Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate. While all six doors will lead into the same store, the Ultimate door requires a fee of $100 for no apparent reason.
And also [...]

When it comes to online coolness, the Queen has shown she can have the last laugh. Even as businesses and media companies struggle with new technology and creating an interesting, useful and appealing website, Britain’s Queen Liz has relaunched a laudable effort that includes links to the Royal Family YouTube channel and has a helpful [...]

The leaked draft data retention bill in full

Published byKarlin under ireland, privacy

I’ve posted my story on this leaked bill below, but if anyone is interested in some light reading, Digital Rights Ireland has posted the full bill. Meanwhile, yesterday the European Court of Justice upheld data retention… sort of. It wasn’t really deciding on the substantive issue of retention but rather responding to a challenge as to how the EU [...]
