Hi Brendan-- Yeah, some exploit -- not sure how it works but I have had that happen too. I updated the blog software recently so hopefully that will stop it -- extremely annoying. If anyone knows the exact issue please let me know!

Hi Karlin

When I view your blog these days, it is often corrupted with the names of various drugs, e.g. "Lowest price Ambien", which replace titles and are dotted in various parts of the text. Refreshing the screen makes no difference but, oddly, the blog appears correctly anytime I click on the responses link, even if there are no comments.

It could well be our server here (I regularly get spammed with stuff that has got past our filters) but I thought I'd mention it. No other blog seems to be affected in the same way...

I also met Danny when he was doing his PhD and recently had cause to re-read his book. He was and remains a very perceptive guy - I took from his analysis that depth and sustainability of Irish innovation is hampered by our short term perspective and is the cause of the under-capitalisation of our companies. We also don't support our own people and ideas half enough - the inferiority complex still lurks in some quarters of Irish society. I would really like to share his view that the recent crisis will be a catalyst for a change in the administrative structures both in Government and finance - but will the turkeys vote for Christmas?

Adele Mildred Koss aka Milly Koss is my Mom. She is one of our foremothers - a first generation programmer in 1950 working for Eckert Mauchley. She retired as the Associate Director of OIT at Harvard University in 1996! Her first boss was Grace Hopper. She developed on of the first sorting programs among other accomplishments. There are several articles she has written for the IEEE Annals of Computing History that detail her work in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Milly is my heroine! She did all of this with a supportive husband, Norman while raising 3 children. Mazal Tov Milly!

Well he's certainly getting some mileage out of it. The Minnesota Vikings invited him along to their practice ahead of the NFC Championship game in order to inspire the players (it didn't work).

i was very happy to read what you wrote, i am almost 56 and remember quite a bit of what you tell. it was good to hear someone communicate those things, recently my wife asked if i would please go with her to see 'the road'. now i have the same nightmares as i did fifty years ago watching bad sci-fi flicks about the apocalypse. but your article let me know others think about things, things that wonder thru my mind. i am glad to have read it and will continue to go on this web site for more.
have a wonderful year.
